Extremely Active Atlantic Hurricane Season Predicted for 2024

Colorado State University (CSU) researchers have predicted an extremely active Atlantic hurricane season in their early 2024 forecast released April 4.

Tropical weather experts predict a 62% chance for a major hurricane on the U.S. coastline this year, which is 19% higher than average. They also project that there will be 23 named tropical storms and 115 this year, including 11 hurricanes, 45 hurricane days, and 13 major hurricane days.

“We anticipate a well above-average probability for major hurricanes making landfall along the continental United States coastline and in the Caribbean,” the forecast states. “As with all hurricane seasons, coastal residents are reminded that it only takes one hurricane making landfall to make it an active season. Thorough preparations should be made every season, regardless of predicted activity.”

CSU researchers noted that record warm weather patterns in the Atlantic, Caribbean, and Gulf of Mexico, could contribute to an increase in tropical weather. The team is forecasting the greatest number of hurricanes since 2020 due to similar atmospheric conditions to that year.

The tropical weather could impact travel plans on the Atlantic coastline during hurricane season, which lasts from June 1 through Nov. 30.
