The increasing importance of using social networks to promote one's website cannot be ignored. Regardless of the industry of your business or even your personal website, it is imperative for a website owner to understand the huge role played by social networks during the website promotion strategy (which coincidentally never ends).
As far as travel websites are concerned, social networks are even more useful for a couple of reasons. The main reason is that people are always more willing to share their travel experiences online than any other activity. While you may struggle to get any kind of feedback for most businesses, the travel industry is one of the few where people are always on the lookout for the information and where they are always eager to share any interesting tip or advice that they find.
Consequently, effectively using social networks to promote your travel website becomes absolutely necessary. The two main social networks, Facebook and Twitter, are moreover never to be ignored. While you could afford to disregard the lesser social networks, ignoring either Facebook or Twitter would be a huge mistake considering the enormous user base of each network as well as both websites' enduring popularity. Because Facebook is more complex, I will be focusing on it.
Your travel website on Facebook
Your first step on Facebook should be to create a Facebook Page about your website. The Facebook Page is a popular feature that gives you the ability to create a public page that showcases your products and services. It also allows you to create a custom page that includes your own design as well as links to any page of your website, thereby making it one of the most significant social tools ever conceived.
Once you have created your Facebook Page, you can thus start posting updates on your page wall. However, if you want your page to be a truly effective asset, there are two extremely important things to consider. The first thing is that you should not simply keep plugging links to your own website. People will eventually get fed up with that and you will rapidly find that you are not actually getting much traffic from your Facebook page. Be on the lookout for great travel-related articles and link to those too.
The second consideration is that you should allow regular Facebook users to post on your wall too. This is one of the biggest mistakes you could make for a travel website. People who are following a travel website's Facebook Page will generally want to interact with it. They could be praising you or criticizing you but they'll still be eager to actually post something too. Due to this, restricting posting privileges to administrators only will deprive you of great content on your Facebook page.
As more people regularly post on your Facebook page, it will directly bring in new visitors since these updates will automatically be shared on their profiles (depending on their respective settings, but most users have them enabled by default) and will thus show up on their friends' feeds. Moreover, the fact that so many people are posting updates and liking these also send great signals to Google, thereby granting more authority to your Facebook page and any link that has been posted on it.
