Thinking laterally when creating a link network

Travel Blog Promotion Blog

We all know by now that to get visible in google we need backlinks, preferably with the anchor text being the terms we wish to rank for. People go to all the usual places to find links: article directories, forums, web 2.0 sites such as squidoo, blog comments, and of course the old "contacting other webmasters and making friends in exchange for a link". However, to stay ahead, we need to think laterally. What we really need is a link network, a series of sites we have control over (in terms that we can have our link placed in a choice location), but that other people will add content to and promote. Thus, over time, these sites will grow in authority and your links will be worth more. Get more and more of these sites, and scale it up. Sounds simple in Principle, but how on earth do we get this done quickly, and more importantly, cheaply? Use your imagination. Here are some ideas you can use as inspiration

Help other people get on the web

Put an ad in the music section of your local classifieds saying you offer free webspace and free hosting for any local band. If you have a virtual server (40€ a month) then you can create a load of websites using wordpress or joomla, with a simple but decent template, and voila, you can knock up a site in a couple of hours. Spend an hour or two showing the member of the band who will be updating the site how to add a post, add a video etc, and be on the end of the phone to help them should they get stuck. Encourage them to get links to the site. As they are motivated young whipper snappers with dreams of fame flashing through their eyes, they will propably enthusiastically attack this task, and get links to their site whenever they have a concert, they will get links from their mates band pages, etc etc. And this site is now on your network, gaining authority all by itself with very little input from you, building a nice resource of link juice. You need to make it clear to the band you want to have a link (or five links) with anchor text of your choice in exchange for this. End result: everybody wins.

Now, repeat the process with another band. If you do a good job, the bands will tell their mates, and you will soon have plenty of people wanting to put content on your network. Recruit one of the people who seems most enthusiastic about the websites to set sites up for other new bands (for free of course, this is a learning experience), and you don´t even have to worry about setting the sites up anymore. Rinse and repeat.

This is only one example

What about other groups of people who could use a hand getting on the web? A local mothers meeting group, a group that does activities for old people, a local football team, an avant-guard theatre group... the possibilities are endless.
