How to effectively promote your travel website through article marketing

Travel Blog Promotion Blog

This is a guest post from Ash

Article marketing is one of the most debated techniques when it comes to search engine optimization. Although Google and other search engines want everybody to believe that article marketing is a complete waste of time, many tests have proven that they are actually helpful in ranking a website, regardless of its theme. Article marketing is thus an extremely useful technique for promoting a travel website, but like all SEO techniques, there are some important points to consider.

The main thing to keep in mind is that article marketing will not be enough for a travel blog or website. It will be helpful in getting a brand new website noticed by search engines but will not suffice to break into the first page due to the fact that the travel industry is so hotly contested. Thankfully, it is incredibly easy to create great content for a travel blog.

When promoting your travel blog through article marketing, you should keep in mind that it serves little purpose submitting the same article to dozens of article directories. Firstly, most of these directories are of extremely low quality and are probably ignored by search engines anyway. Secondly, having so many similar articles point to your website will cause them to be ignored by search engines. There has been some debate that these may even incur a penalty on your website but that is a myth. If it were so easy to trigger a penalty on any website, everybody would just be building such links to his competitor’s websites and SEO would eventually be replaced by negative SEO.

It is a better idea to identify a few article directories that will actually have some impact on your search engine position while nevertheless sending you some traffic. EzineArticles is definitely the first such directory you should submit to, and there are also other great directories such as GoArticles. A quick look at some forums will allow you to identify those directories you should submit to.

As discussed earlier, you must also refrain from posting the exact same article on multiple websites to maximize the effectiveness of this strategy. Many authors resort to using automatic spinning software which basically rewrites the original article by substituting synonyms. However, it is important to note that these spinners often create poor quality text that will make a bad impression on readers. It is easier to rewrite the article manually, or if you would rather use a spinner, you should check the spun article before submitting it to a directory.

One thing that is slowly deterring many writers from relying on article marketing is content theft. The purpose of article directories is to provide free content that publishers can use as long as they credit the source. However, it is unfortunate to note that many websites are simply taking such content without actually linking back to the writer’s website. In other cases, they will remove the links and automatically spin the article before publishing it. It now seems that at most 50% of websites using articles from directories are actually playing by the rules and it is often difficult to do anything against such content theft.

As discussed throughout this post, while article marketing is slowly losing its effectiveness and appeal, it nevertheless has its purpose and can contribute to your SEO strategy. You should however keep these points in mind when using it or you will be simply wasting time you could have spent on another technique.

I think article marketing is like everything else, you can get some good links from it, but should use it in conjunction with a solid backlink strategy. As you said, Ash, it is best to choose one or two sites that actually pass some value and stick to those.
I agree that this has been abused in the past, with everybody jumping on the bandwagon and using automated software submission..

Yes. Moreover, with Google starting to crack down on these low-quality article directories, it'd be just a waste of time.
