When it comes to attracting tourists from all over the globe, Australia’s pretty impressive. Not only do we have some of the best beaches and bush land in the world, but our cities and towns are great as well. With some of the friendliest, most laid back locals you’re ever likely to find, it doesn’t matter whether you’re living in up in Surfer´s Paradise accomadation or camping on the Great Ocean Road—you’re bound to have a good time. If you’re the kind of traveller who likes to explore charming little towns and villages, however, Australia has rather a wide range to choose from. Here, we’ve put together a list of Australia’s top 5 cutest towns. Enjoy!
Bangalow
In Northern NSW, near Byron Bay, the cute, quirky town of Bangalow attracts its fair share of visitors each day. Charming colonial-style Queenslander houses line the lush tropical streets, and the main street is positively lousy with little galleries, boutique craft shops and trendy designs. The Bangalow Pub serves up a surprisingly gourmet meal, and the once-monthly Bangalow Markets draw people from all over the region.
People in Bangalow seem happier and more content than the rest of the population at large, and with many residents having made the move up North from Sydney to escape the hustle and bustle, you get the feeling that they’re not taking their lifestyle for granted.
Beechworth
In Northern Victoria, the small historic town of Beechworth packs a dazzling culinary punch. The region is dotted with wineries and some of the most incredible local produce, and this all culminates at the Beechworth Harvest Festival held each May. The local pubs look like generic country drinking holes from the outside, but as soon as your meal comes to the table, things get exciting.
It’s pretty rare that you’ll find truffle oil and chestnut-infused pork belly at your local in the average Australian country town, but for Beechworth this is just par for the (third) course! Along with the incredible food and wine scene, Beechworth is a hub of antiques and collectibles, and it is set in one of the prettiest areas of the state, with rolling hills and crisp air. The streets are lined with colonial buildings (even a trip to the bank feels like a historical adventure) and there is a bakery that is not to be missed.
Leura
If you’re looking for quaint and pretty, Leura, the charming little village in the Blue Mountains should make it to the top of your list. Not only does the town have a wealth of arts and crafts on offer, it is nestled in the foothills of one of the most stunning mountain ranges in the country.
Whether you’re looking for antiques, a nice B&B, a romantic getaway or you’re simply passing through as part of a Blue Mountains tour, Leura will enchant and delight like few other towns can. Make sure you stop for high tea if you have a chance—it’s even prettier with a nice cup of tea and some scones with clotted cream on your plate!
