5 Things You Must See In Cyprus

Cyprus holidaysCyprus’ allure is undeniable but taking full advantage of all the pleasures the island offers can be a little daunting. Here are the five “must dos” to help you make the most of your travel time.

Make a pilgrimage to a painted church: The picturesque Troodos Mountains are not only a perfect retreat for those looking to relax and rejuvenate, but the hills are also dappled with some of the most stunning churches Cyprus has to offer. In between hiking and biking, seek refuge in one of the mountainside’s Byzantine monasteries. Kykkos Monastery is the most awe inspiring, featuring lavish murals dating back to the end of the 11th century. Here you can see some of the best examples of early Christian art while you take in the many views of this quaint village.
Wander through Cyprus’ pleasure-seeking past: Experience Cyprus’ glory days at Kato Pfos, the most accessible of the islands with many archaeological sites. Take in the immaculately preserved mosaics at one of the four villas that have survived since the Roman Empire. The fascinating frescoes depict surprisingly erotic themes, which have led historians to believe that Cyprus was just as much a hedonistic haven, then, as it is now. The House of Dyonisus, named for the Greek god of wine, is particularly noteworthy for being the largest and most lavish of the Kato Pfos villas.

Walk the line: The city of Nicosia allows its visitors to take in both parts of Cyrpus’ dueling heritage. In the North, Turkish culture rains supreme when compared to the more Grecian south and Ledra Street is the best place for you to witness the divide. Peer down from the Shacolas Tower Museum & Observatory to enjoy a panoramic view of the divide. Once you descend, indulge in an authentic Turkish bath then explore the Roman ruins just to the south in the seaport village, Famagusta. Nicosia is also the home of the Cyprus Museum, a comprehensive collection of art dating from the early Stone Age to the Christian Byzantine Empire.

Revel in some revelry: Cyprus’ hedonistic past is vividly present in Ayia Napa, which flaunts by far the liveliest nightlife in all of Cyprus. The numerous bars and clubs are so lively that this surprisingly laid back town is known to rival Ibiza when it comes to Mediterranean partying. However, Ayia Napa is also a charming place to see even if partying isn’t on your travel “to do” list. The monastery in the heart of the city and Limnaki Harbor alone make Ayia Napa worth a visit.

Give in to your inner beach bum: Coral Bay is the destination for those seeking out the best beaches in all of Cyprus. Sure, there’s a lot of competition but the accessibility and accommodation here guarantee a pleasant stay. The beach resort is set on a soft sand beach that is perfect for sun worshippers. There are also countless shops and kiosks along the broad shoreline in case you’re looking to lighten your pockets. Steep limestone cliffs that flank each side of the cove add to the picturesque quality while the numerous water sports offered make Coral Bay more than just a pretty view.
