Amsterdam’s Top 5 Museums

When contemplating a trip Amsterdam, it’s highly likely you’ll want to explore one or more of the 50+ assorted museums, scattered around the Dutch capital. If you are visiting for a weekend city break, or a few nights stopover on your European tour, it can be a tricky decision as to which museums you should prioritise on your ‘must see’ list. Highlighted below are the top 5 museums that you should certainly consider when visiting Amsterdam.

Van Gogh1. The Van Gogh Museum – Whether you’re an art enthusiast or not, it’s hard not to be captivated by the impressive works of the Dutch painter, Vincent Van Gogh. This museum houses the largest collection of his life’s masterpieces, including the infamous Sunflowers, Starry Night, and Almond Blossoms. There are 5 arrangements of his work, representing the various periods of his creative life, and the different locations that he resided. Although the highlight of the Van Gogh Museum is of course his personal creations, you can also appreciate the works of alternative artists from the 19th century. Adult admission is priced at €14, with free entry for children under 17 years.

2. Anne Frank House - Perhaps the most poignant of all museums in Amsterdam, The Anne Frank House is an insightful visit to learn about, or refresh your knowledge on the Nazi persecution during World War II. Explore the family hideout, and reflect on the tragic occurrences when Anne Frank and her family were arrested in 1944, after 2 years of concealment. Admission is €9.50 for adults, with concessions for children.

Heineken 3. Heineken Experience – Granted, this is a very different museum, but Amsterdam is well-known for its brews, therefore it’s not surprising that it makes the top 5. Contained in the Heineken’s original brewery, this is more than just a beer museum, offering both history, and interactive experiences and taste testing. Admission into the Heineken Experience costs €16, with children under 8 receiving free entry.

4. The Rijksmuseum – The Rijksmuseum, or ‘State Museum’ as it is loosely translated, is the national museum of The Netherlands, and houses much-loved artistic pieces and historic collections. Housed in an architecturally magnificent neo-Renaissance structure, it won’t only be the internal exhibits that catch your eye. Works from famous artists such as Rembrandt, Frans Hals, and Jan Steen adorn the walls of the museum, while visitors should also visit the unique exhibition named ‘The Masterpieces’ with breath-taking collections from the 17th century. Admission is €14 for adults, with free entry for children up to 18 years.

5. Erotic Museum – If you‘re curious about the history behind Amsterdam’s liberal culture and open-minded attitude to sex, then you should check out Amsterdam’s Erotic Museum. Located in the Red Light District, you won’t stumble upon the museum unless you visit this fascinating area. The museum houses a collection of intimate paintings, sculptures, and photographs from historic eras to modern times, with a souvenir shop selling erotic items. Admission into the Erotic Museum is €5.

With such a variety of museums available, you really are spoilt for choice. If you have a particular museum in mind for your visit, why not select Amsterdam holiday apartments that are within easy walking distance, to ensure your trip is as convenient as possible.
