Cabo Frio in Portuguese means ‘cold cape’ and is not be confused with Ilha de Cabo or the Island of Cabo. Hailed for its soft gold and ginger beaches, Cabo Frio is one of the most popular seaside resorts in Brazil. A little over 160 kilometers from Rio de Janeiro this picturesque town was first established by the Portuguese in the early 17th century. How to get there

The Cabo International Airport gets chartered flights from Chile, Uruguay and Argentina during the peak season. It is also served by quite a few domestic airlines. Your best bet, therefore, is to change flights at Rio if you are traveling from outside Brazil. Buses from Rio leave for Cabo Frio every half hour.

Transportation

The main bus station is situated at the Julia Kubitschek Avenue. Also, cabs are available throughout the city at all hours of the day. Transport, therefore, is relatively easy to come by.

Cabo Frio: Best spots

Once in Cabo Frio you simply cannot miss visiting the 17th century Sao Mateus Fort dominating the town’s pristine coastline. This military fort buit in 1703 to defend against pirates attacking the gold pipeline that ran down to Minas Gerais

Drive down to the quaint little fishing village at Sao Pedra de Aldeia, a former Jesuit mission station with an impressive church and historically protected buildings.
